What Can You Do When The Fish Aren't Biting?
Try Spoon Feeding Them!!!!
With all the new fangled lures on the market today. A fishermen can go crazy, if not broke trying to find that certain lure that is a proven fish catcher. Today lures come in such a wide variety of colors, shapes, textures and designs. Like pitchers in baseball now days, lures are usually specialized for their certain characteristics in order to tantalize a specific species of fish. In order for the serious fishermen to ensure he has the right lure for any conditions that may come up. His tackle box may soon start to resemble Jefro Boudin's lunch box on the old Beverly Hillbillies. Not only can this be very awkward and cumbersome in the real world. It will also cost you a pretty penny trying to keep up with the ever changing styles and designs that seem to show up every week at your local supply house. As for the wade fishermen who only has a limited amount of room in the old wade belt. Deciding on which one to pack and which one to leave out could become quite a chore. Now my suggestion may not provide the fail safe answer to these other nagging questions. It may help you in those trying times when nothing that you throw seems to be producing any results.
This wonder of modern technology is not really all that new. In fact it was probably one of the first lures that man ever used. It probable got its start in prehistoric times, when Stoney the cave man, realized that the fish he was trying to knock on the head with the stone he was throwing at them. Would chase after the stone to the bottom after it missed them. And using that ever-expanding brain, tried tying a piece hair to his invention. Before you know it the first fish story was born, as was the first spoon. Before long Stoney couldn't keep up with the demands and had to expand his business. Which led to a lucrative tour on the prehistoric fishing tour. Which led to the first fishing show and the rest is history!!!!
But seriously this type of lure can be traced back thousands of years in the past and in one form or another has been in existence to modern times. The simple reason this holds true is because it works. And works well on almost all species of fish from Trout to Reds, Flounder to Tarpon, Saltwater to Freshwater species alike. In fact when asked which type of lure you would prefer to have if stranded on a deserted island most fishing experts would choice some sort of spoon lure. Because of its almost remarkable ability to attract interest in such a wide variety of fish.
So now that I have introduced you to the perfect all around lures you may think you troubles are over. Unfortunately just like a fast food franchise can take the most simplistic of ideas as a hamburger. And find more than twenty different way to alter it in order twenty separate menu items. The tried and true spoon lure has gone thru its metamorphosis of change thru the years, much like a caterpillar. Until it has become something almost unrecognizable from it tried and true form. And just like a model T ford can still get you from point A to B. Driving a new Mustang may work may turn a few more heads and in this case the heads that are turning are the fish.
Spoons comes a wide variety and styles, with attachments that can be used to help entice strikes. But basically there are the two styles. First is the original design spoon in the tear drop, concave shape with a treble hook on the end. You known it well, cause it probably one of the first artificial you used when borrowing tackle from your grandfathers tackle box. And though the colors and patterns may have been modified thru the years. The main design has remain true to its original design. And works just as well on Trout, Reds, Strippers, and Bass today as it did way back then.
Second type are what I would describe as imitational design, made to simulate the type of prey the predators usually forage on. Now these can become a little trickier to spot the productive, well established, spoon designs from the one that are flooding the market on a seemly daily basis. They come in metal as well as plastic, weed less, with treble hooks or regular style, single or multicolored. Depending on what water conditions you'll be fishing should help narrow your decisions on what to purchase. Back bays and flats will opted for lures most resembling shad or small bait fish. And will help if they are lighter and weedless. to bounce along the bottom to help entice a strike from a Trophy Trout or Flounder. Around the Jetties and off shore fishermen should stay with the more traditional style, this will allow them to reach the bottom quicker and jig up and down waiting for that Snapper to grab hold of it.
Either style you decided to go with you should find your numbers increase when chunking a few spoons when all else fails. Who know it may become your first choice out of the tackle box instead of the last resort!!! In any case take it from me and my Prehistoric friend Stoney when we say try a spoon next time you may be pleasantly surprised. Or as Stoney would say "AAAAUGH, work GOOODD!!!!!!
