The lane snapper often referred to as the spot snapper is the smallest of the snapper
clan. Coloration like other snapper will vary but most often rosy- red to olive-green.
There are horizontal yellow stripes along the sides, often masked by vertical blotching.
The lane's most distinctive marking is the dark spot between the lateral line and the
beginning of the rear soft dorsal fin, hence the name spot snapper. Found offshore along
the outer banks they are not found in Texas waters in great numbers. Usually caught while
fishing for their cousins the reds, they too are good to eat.
