One of the many of the snapper family, but definitely the largest. The dog snapper get
it's name from the canine found in it's large mouth. Found offshore around structure from
rigs to reefs, not much is known of their breeding habits. Usually inhabits deeper waters
will come across them while fishing for their well known cousin the red's. Coloration is
coppery-red with faint vertical stripes. Although they are able to change their coloration
according to their enviorment. A dark blue spot or blue line appears below the eye but not
always the case. Juvenilles can be confused with cubera or gray snappers. They can be found
in the warm summer months on the deeper outer reef in small numbers. The good news is they
are edible.
