Now lets see how you did on our first our Hammer-Time Fishing quiz!! There will be a slight curve allowance for those who were out sick/fishing last week. For those new students just transferring from Fresh Water Lake High, please pay attention and take notes. The material covered in the advanced saltwater fishing class will be a little more in depth than that material covered in the remedial fresh water fishing course. Our students have already covered stump finding, hole baiting, moss maneuvering, and jet ski dodging in the last years curriculum. New students will be required to read those chapters on tidal movements, moon phases, water salinity, and Texas Bay locations before next week's class. The correct answer to the question is number four. Although this was a trick question those that have read the past weeks fishing reports from Baffin Bay location would know that the usually present infamous brown tide has been dwindling of late to it's almost non-existence present situation. Water clarity in and around the Baffin Bay estuary for the last several weeks has been excellent. In fact those ever-present lower units, prop-eating rocks that litter the bay are clearly visible to even the novice of Baffin Bay anglers. Those fishermen who have had problems with rock location in the past. Should take advantage of this rare opportunity and enter rock locations into their GPS equipment now since they are so visible for future references. So early next spring when the brown tide returns to Baffin don't be surprised to see many a novice angler zig zagging through the bay like a pinball gone amuck in an arcade machine. Dodging those prop mangling rocks that chew up stainless faster than old George Foreman can eat a double meat whopper!!! Those students who choose number 3 as the correct answer mark your test now.

Question number one was a gimme definitions since most all of you students, even the new fresh water transfers should know that Baffin Bay is one of the most highly regarded fishing destination along our Texas Gulf Coast. These pristine waters that are getting better by the day since the fungus amongus brown tide algae has decide to make a much appreciated retreat of late. Showing new and veteran Baffin anglers alike some off the bays structure that it is famous for. With rocking and varying underwater terrain that fluctuate from depths reaching the double digits to nationally famous ankle deep shoreline. Tailor made for those fishing enthusiast who are more at ease with a fly rod chasing tailing reds. Fishing hot spots, if the truth were told, where a majority of Texas's bigger trout has eaten their last croaker. Before finding their final resting place on den wall throughout the state. Names like Starvation and Kleberg's points, Black and White Bluffs, and the Land Cut are permanently entered into many a veteran Texas anglers GPS waypoints. And for good reason cause this is a sow trout haven. With spring trout swollen to almost unimaginable proportion with egg-laden bellies. The experienced fishermen, who are serious about catching a CCA tournament winning trout, make a beeline to this bay the first week. In hopes of catching one of those Mothers before she has a chance to drop those eggs and drop a few pounds and just become another wall hanger. Baffin Bay has long been regarded as the number one bay along the Texas coast for double-digit trout. Chances are whenever you see a fishing program on cable with celebrities Hammering trout in record numbers and record sizes fishing with croaker. This is where all the action is being filmed. In fact during the early spring spawning runs it can become quite a hindrance to those fishermen who frequent this bay on a continuing basis. With five or six boats running around a particular well known hot spot for trophy trout. Some boats filled with cameras other with the shows celebrities, and the water filled with divers armed with camera for those underwater shots. Many a Joe Blow fishermen has been pushed out of camera range with some strung together expletives normally usually only heard around construction job sites. So those students who marked the correct answer to the quiz as number 2 correct your papers now.

Which brings us to the final question of the quiz. Where is the best fishing spot along the Texas coast to get a butt-whippin for disturbing a anglers fishing under a flock of seagulls over a school of feeding trout?? This definitely does apply to Baffin Bay, so those who guessed this answer you are wrong. Those fishermen who regular frequent this bay are just as much at ease slappin you up side the head with a croaker than giving you the one finger salute when you venture to close to their fishing spot. And the meaning bird watching takes on a whole new meaning from the laid back, well mannered past time to those land dwelling bird watching enthusiast. Out on the bay diving birds means feeding trout. And feeding trout means high-strung fishermen. With high-powered bay boats that would make some bass fishermen feeling a bit envious. Bay-necks search the horizon for feeding seagulls with binoculars in one hand and a Coors lite in the other. Are capable of 1/4 mile runs faster than most fuel dragsters. And little regard is given to those starting from an adjacent starting point, the first to the hole is the winner. It kinda reminds one of playing musical chairs with Fat Albert, cause out here the big boys usually get the seat. Once the spot has been claimed veteran anglers will guard their territory like lions fighting over a fresh kill.

So future Baffin anglers be forewarned although there is little doubt this is one of Texas's best trophy trout bays, with state records to back those boost up. The waters are not for the weak, it can get pretty brutal out there at times. Make sure those motors are tuned up, those binoculars are in working order, and all your gear secure for those warp-speed bay runs you'll be making during the course of the day. On Baffin usually the fastest man win, or if not at least the dirtiest. At this bay it's not only the trout that come back to the dock with a little bloody nose or a few fight mark looking like something the seagull dragged in!!!!
