The barred grunt belongs to the grunt family (Pomadasyidae) and is a close relative to
the pigfish or piggy perch. Grunts closely resemble snapper but do not have teeth in the
roof of their mouth. Their habitates are the offshore platforms and snapper reefs, where
they are quite adapted at stealing bait. Coloration is silverish with 8 broad vertical
bars intermingled with lengthwise yellowish stripes on the side. This species although
edible is smallish in nature and full of bones. Best used for bait or released to steal
your bait again..
